The site features weekly blogs on a variety of physical and mental health topics to which teens can post responses,  as well as health tips and trendy health topics posted in bulletins that instantaneously reach all our friends.

So pass the word! Have your students check us out at http://www.myspace.com/learntobehealthy. Or, if you are one of the 50 million users already on MySpace, send us a friend request yourself! It’s not just MySpace, it’s OUR Space!

Are Popular Energy Drinks Dangerous?

Physical endurance. Reaction speed and concentration. Mental alertness. Overall feeling of well-being. Stamina. Who doesn’t want all that?

Many students are falling victim to the flashy marketing and unverified claims made by manufacturers of energy drinks. But as research continues, the dangers of these drinks are being exposed.

A small case study presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s annual meeting indicates that ingestion of energy drinks may even provoke seizures in susceptible individuals. Common ingredients in the energy drinks that were suspected of causing the seizures were caffeine, taurine, and guarana.

Other studies show the adverse effects to include dehydration, insomnia, headaches, nervousness, nosebleeds, and vomiting. While these studies warrant more research, many schools are banning the popular energy drinks altogether.
